Amun Ra
Medwyn Goodall, English composer and multifaceted musician, has produced a zillion albums. They seem to qualify as New Age and are largely peaceful and calming. Of course, anyone who knows me will also know that I’m not into peaceful and calming. Frankly, I think peace is overrated! Well, in music anyway. I like my music to be intense – even tense, sometimes – and decidedly passionate.
That said, I discovered that one of Goodall’s albums has a pharaonic flavor and uses Middle East rhythms. It’s called Amun Ra and has 7 rather pretty tracks. Unfortunately, they’re rather simillar to one another. But fortuntely, they’re “zilly” and very listenable for anyone who likes Orientalesque music. It’s probably not high on the danceability index but would work nicely for warm ups and arm drills.
I got the album from eMusic, which is where you can also hear the samples even if you don’t have an account.
Really great music Mala!! I got it immediately after listening to the glimpses on emusic! I ve been searching for relaxing Mideastern flavoured music for a LONG time for stretching.
I used to be very bad (lazy) with it until I got hurt.
Been better since then, but I realized this summer I need music to go with it, as I need for exercising. I think my mind gets bored too quick if there s no music for the mood.
I tried a few songs from Hossam Ramzy Immortal Egypt, coz I liked them on my beginner dvd Amira 101. problem: she used the slow parts of the songs repeatedly. The songs in reality get fast with some pumping sounds I personally find distracting and uncomfortable while stretching.
This is great music for that purpose! Plus it s really cool to find something “Egyptian” flavoured, I guess most music of this kind is Indian flavoured (which I would not mind, only I have only found so-so songs on youtube so far – any suggestions for great Central or Eastern Asian relaxing sounds?).
So a heartfelt thumbs up for this suggestion!!!!!! Thank you Mala
Yes, Amun Ra is quite relaxing. I like the title track.
Stretching to no music is quite boring, for sure. But I too don’t find Ramzy in that genre. Most of his music will have a lot of variation in it so it won’t be appropriate for stretching for which you need quiet steady music.
I’ll tell you what else I spot in that genre.
ya exactly, lots of variation in tempo, unless you cut out slow passages and keep them repeat what the producers of that dvd did.
Thanks
