Well, this intresting looking DVD is due for release soon. From the preview, it looks pretty much like it takes World Dance’s tribal fusion line several notches further into advanced territory. Moving on from isolation drills, which we’ve seen in all the previous DVDs so far, this one gets into styling and interesting techniques like contrasing fluid with percussive moves. And there’s a whole choreograhy here too! Yes, it’s definitely time for full-fledged choreographies.

  • I was planning to focus on Persian and Egyptian bellydance this coming year because I was making actual progress there, but I might want to get this dvd because I’m a dancing songwriter and the zil-playing and musical styling sections will be very useful to me as a performer.

  • Dina says:

I’ll be so interested in the zil part – musicality :)
I need to fix the elastic to my pretty Saroyan ones and finally start zilling :)

  • Dina says:

P.s. are you guys interested in Turkish Rom dance?
I posted on the bhuz thread

I would SO love to have an instructional on this kind of dance!

  • Mala says:

I’m finding the thought of learning arm patterns, turns, liquid moves and stylizations very interesting. There’s yet another tribal one to be released soon by WDNY,by the way. And then a series of Sera! Put together, they’ll have a huge tribal fusion line!

  • Ruth says:

Is that the Elisheva one? Pops, locks and rolls I think (or some other very similar combination). I’ve been looking forward to both of these, I’m getting a bit more into fusion again thanks to Anasma.

  • Tami says:

In some ways, I wish I could appreciate tribal fusion style as I do the dancers’ skill. I recognize their artistry. I just find that no matter how hard I try to like the style, I can’t. Maybe it’s the aesthetics? I look at classic bellydance and variations on it and I identify with it. I just can’t connect with tribal fusion. From the costuming to the various positions and executions of movements, sigh. Oh, well. I am wanting Fayzah’s DVD very much though. I think she’s fabulous.
*tries not to look at open stanced squats*

  • Mala says:

Yes, Ruth, Elisheva . I couldn’t remember her spelling. :-) I’m very curious about this one.

  • Mala says:

:-) Tami, you don’t have to like tribal fusion at all. Just take what you want from it and focus on what gives you more pleasure to learn and watch. I don’t like or care about so many styles. All the very folkloric ones, for eg. Also I hate all those wing thingies. All that flapping about, really, it all looks precisely the same to me. I also don’t much like ATS and can’t handle all those funny ear-like things they do with their hair, all the loud clamorous zilling and all the yelping and whooping.

I too don’t like many things about tribal fusion. But I guess I like an equal number. I do like their costumes and jewelery, the floreos and other hand and arm work, the way the isolations are used, the slight weirdness, the strange expressions… and the whole look of stunning control. I haven’t actually managed any of it myself at all. Except that one Arabian Spices which I don’t count – it’s in its own category.

  • Mala says:

Oh wow! Sadly I have to wait to go home from office to see this! Sadie’s?

  • Dina says:

    yes exactly! Sadie and Kaya.
Then there s the Sadie abdominal one for IAMED which someone said was delayed to next year.
Sadie and Kaya Pops Locks Layers that has just been filmed.
    A mystery solo Kaya one.

And one I look forward to VERY much: Ava Fleming Drum solo. I recently watched many IAMED performance ones. Ava does such charming drum solos! very technical, but internal and interesting with a very individual touch.
She’s a doll, also, I once asked her about one of her skirts and she replied within seconds!! SO nice. you may want to interview her Mala!

  • Tami says:

Mala, I would be happy if there was more actual bellydance movement used with the Isis Wings. When I first saw them used it was in one of Rania’a videos. It is still my favorite. It’s in the Bellydance Divas one where she is in gold and all wing movements complement her bellydance moves and her moves fit the music and theme of the dance. Whew! Yeah, I think if Isis Wings are going to be used they should complement the dance/dancer and not be the main focus. Neon’s Stellar Body dvd is another one I like watching over and over. Ok, I am going to go back and watch both of these now. I think I need to upgrade Rania’s from VHS to DVD. LOL!

  • Tami says:

Oh, sorry, I went off topic! lol

the cover is classy this time!!

Sajia- where are you learning Persian dance from? I love the music a lot :) )))

  • Mala says:

Oh dear… I like the look of this 2nd Pops Locks. I’ll have to get it! And I like the sound of Ava Flemmings and a mystery DVD from Kaya! Gosh, I think I’ll do some Sadie drills today.

Yes, it was Sadie who told me she’d put off the abs one till the end of the year.

  • Ruth says:

I like the look of pops locks 2 as well, but I don’t think I can justify it at the moment, as I haven’t managed to complete the first pops locks, or thrilling drilling! I’d definitely have to get Abs with Sadie as it’s one of my favourite topics.
Ava Fleming drum solo…hmm.. sounds tempting as well. I’d love a drum solo dvd by Shabnam even more though.

I don’t think she has any dvds yet.

    Dina-
I’m not sure I would describe the new Pops Locks cover as ‘classy’, there’s still a whole lotta cheek on display! I guess it looks less ‘bondage’ than the last one, but on closer inspection the bedlah costumes were assuit, and actually quite nice. The less said about the hideous nappy/trouser things they wore with them the better.

I also just got the Zoe Jakes Drum solo dvd, it’s a bdss offering, but a bit more content than the usual fayre. To my mind there are some very tribal-fusion-looking things which don’t sit quite right in a drum solo, but it is interesting to see a different take.

  • Mala says:

I wonder why Sadie and Kaya feel they have to have that veneer of “cheek” . With that much skill, they don’t need it!

I too haven’t got through (nowhere near) with their other drills DVDs. I’m interested in the Ultimate one though because I hear that’s sub-Thrillin Drillin. Anyone here have that?

Shabnam is very popular. Ruth maybe you could persuade her to make a DVD. :-) Or get Michelle to do that.

  • Dina says:

Hmm it might be the shock of last time’s “x-rated film” style cover – but on this one I really think their expression is joyous and innocent rather than explicit..
    their performances are another thing.
    I HATED their performance dvd.
Kaya’s facials were.. uhm, “film x” worthy. And their entire choreography style was too “hot hot hot”. Too much sexuality, drowning the dance in it.

But on this performance piece it seems different. And also the duo drum solo on the last dvd – you can say a lot about their costumes, but I did like the drum solo. Less explicit than their “That’s Hot!” dvd.

  • Hi Dina, sorry I missed your comment. I’m studying Persian dance with Pooneh, a Vancouver based dancer from Iran who is simply incredible – I’ve seen her do amazing pops and locks with drum solo music. I’m hoping to study bandari dance ( I think that’s the name of the cross-dressing dance style) in a couple of years.

  • Dina says:

    hey no problem :)
interesting, I know NOTHING about Persian dance, so I would love to hear some on the style!
I wished there were more ethnic dance learning opportunities.
Turkish Rom, Uzbek, Persian, maybe Afghani..

I love Aisha Ali’s Tunisian dvd, and the saidi ones are nice too. I still think even Arab folkloric styles could receive more attention, even though at least there are a couple. And even more so some other ethnic styles!

  • Compared to traditional Egyptian raqs sharqi, Persian dance tends to focus a lot on upper body and arm movements – Autumn Ward studied Persian style, which might explain the elegance of her arms. It’s certainly one of the main reasons I’m studying Persian style, because I use my arms a lot in performance (easiest body part to move while singing :)

  • Dina says:

Oh yes I can imagine that!
I think Persian and Uzbek folklore looks so pretty with the women telling stories with their hands.
I always find them rather related to Indian style regarding the arm moves!

Oh wow I d love to see Autumn perform Persian!! or an instructional!!!!!!
MALA what about that???? persian by Autumn on WDNY!!!

  • Mala says:

And I was just thinking maybe those guys should do one of the “exotic” dances now. Persian, Armenian, Greek….

I have been trying to acces this website for a while. I was using Chrome then when I tried Firefox, it worked just great? Just wanted to bring this to your attention. This is really a greatwebsite. I have a few myself. I really admire your layout. I know this is off topic but,did you make this theme yourself,or purchase from somewhere?

  • Mala says:

Hello! Others have indeed told me that there’s trouble viewing this blog. But I don’t know what to do about it. I’ve changed themes several times with no improvement.
This theme is one I got off the WordPress collection – it was free. :-)
