Eagerly Awaited

Another advanced tribal fusion video, this one looks like the next step on from Anasma’s 2-dicc set. I’m not likely to be able to do any of it – I haven’t even worked on any of the combos from the beginner tribal videos, for that matter. But I do like looking at them and when possible, working with the isolations.

Rubylooks beautiful as she dances, and she also looks like she knows what she’s talking about. I’m not a hundred percent sure I can manage a lot of floorwork, but I like the look of her approach and conditioning.

  • I’m still not tempted by the Elisheva dvd – she’s as technically good as Anasma, but not as artistic, and I haven’t even got beyond Anasma’s workout yet, and Anasma and Fayzah is more where the experimental side of me is at. Ruby’s floorwork dvd looks promising though – I’m not a Cheeky Girls aficiniado, but Ruby seems to have a good knowledge of the physical and practical issues of floorwork, although I’m still not buying her dvd until I get into floorwork in my advanced classes next year.

  • Tami says:

I wish I could do floorwork. Spurs and cysts in knees and wrists make it very painful. Kneepads under a bellydance skirt wouldn’t be a good thing either. ::cries::

  • Dina says:

Elisheva’s looks just stunning – I will have to work with lower tribal dvds and Anasma’s for years to be able to do it I guess, but I want to get it just for watching her!!

Ruby’s also looks really tempting although I am generally not the biggest fan of floorwork.
Any news for a new dvd by Neon or Sarah Skinner anytime next year?

  • Mala says:

What’s wrong with kneepads under a skirt? They don’t show. Much. :-) One should anyway wear kneepads for practice, specially if you don’t have wooden floors. I use them even when I do have a wooden floor.

My knees make a loud popping sound when I bend. Good thing I’m not a performer! That could be so embarassing! One pop and everyone would probably jump out of their seats and bolt for the door ’cause they’d think it was a bullet or soemthing!

  • Tami says:

I’m talking about those skirts where the legs show. I would rather wear those!!!! LOL! Ah, well…

  • Hannah says:

    These are tempting!
I also noticed today a video available for pre-order on Amazon called Hard Candy–the bellydance workout with Neon, Sarah Skinner, and Elisheva. Wonder if this is a follow-up to Luscious and Love Potion.

  • I suppose one could play it up and decorate the kneepads with bright swatches of fabric and decorations complementing the skirt. No beads or sequins, obviously, but maybe some soft lace?

A propos knees.. did you see?
THe joint mobility and salsa trailers are online :)

  • Mala says:

Yes, the Hard Candy video is the next and p;probably final in the Luscious series. Apparently there’ll be more focus on upper body moves in this one!

The salsa video looks attractive. But then salsa always does – specially solo, if you ask me. Of course, part of it is what you wear and the lovely look in the high heels. That’s one thing I’m not going to do anymore though. It’s a good way to ruin your knees – as I did. The preview shows just the basics being done but they look so good because of the styling and the outfit and shoes and all. The moment you take into flatter shoes – it’s over.

The joints mobility DVD looks very useful. I hope there are enough of the gentle joining warming and loosening up sort of exercises on the video. For the most part I do see some of the same preparatory exercises we all have on other videos. Still… I love new workouts, even if they’re a tiny bit different!

  • Mala says:

Sajia… I think the most important time for the kneepads is during endless practice. For a short while, during a performance, it shouldn’t matter. Unless you have some major knee condition or the floor is exceptionally bad. One should also put away the kneepads sometimes – just to ensure that if you do dance without them, it’s not a shock to the joints.

    Hi Mala :)
ya you’re right part of the major appeal of Latin ladies doing those dances like Argentine Tango, Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue etc is the lovely outfits, the swishy little skirts and the BEAUTIFUL shoes!!

I think we’re luckier in oriental dance – the more Arab look and feel is barefoot. So no knee danger from that :)

I am completely resisting the high heeled look, not only for health reasons, which are quite important IMO, but also for the aestethics.

Now I must admit the shoes are SO important for the Latin aesthetic. but have you watched some Latin music videos? often they dance at the beach, and that barefoot, and it still looks lovely!

  • Mala says:

Ah, compare like to like. Though both the WDNY video and the clip are Latin dancing, what’s being done is very different. It would be very difficult to get that look the 3 girls are doing with the solo shines barefoot in the sand. The clip mostly shows people above the waist, if you notice. They all have lovely fluid hip moves and that makes it look nice. It’s also very very different doing partner dancing. You look good just plain differently. The men and women are nicely welcro’d and move sensuously. But let’s see how they look doing solo shines on the beach.. or anywhere in flat shoes.

  • dina says:

    Ya that’s true!
Essentially it’s just a beach party of regular (if incredibly good looking :) ) people they show. not a dance show.

  • Tami says:

To actually put pressure on my knees, to press them or to kneel on them is very painful. Doctor thinks they are bone spurs. Only a mattress or very deep cushion makes it bearable. No floor dancing for me. *sniff*

  • Mala says:

That’s terrible, Tami. How can it be fixed? Surgery? If you were here someone would have suggested homeopathy!

  • Tami says:

You know, Mala, I never inquired further into it. I am afraid of surgery but if there was anything I could do otherwise, I’d like to know about it.

  • Mala says:

Well, I know they do stuff to disolve or otherwise get rid of heel spurs. I think it might be worth a bit of research on the net and medical consultation. After all, if there is something that can be done, why live with the pain? Not just for dancing, but other stuff — other exercise, for that matter. You need that to keep the rest of you fit!

  • dina says:

I used to shy away from doctors having heard many horror stories of doctors advising surgery too soon, surgery gone bad, doctors working with pain killers and other stuff treating the symptoms only and not the cause..

I ended up going too late with a knee injury. I mean, nothing happened, but healing could have been quicker, less jeopardized and sooner had I gone to see a GOOD doctor sooner.
Now finding a good one is the issue.. I was lucky to have friends in the media business, who asked around who national footballers etc were seeing. Turned out a private sports medicine practice was the first choice for the city I live in. Consultation was not out of this world expensive (they charge a 150,- euro fee for each consultation, and then take one hour time to talk about symptoms and issues in detail, and examine the knee thoroughly – they had specialists for every body part from foot over knee to hip shoulder…).

The doctor was excellent, discouraging any kind of intrusion (from intrusive examinations where they punctuate the knee over painkillers to surgery), advised an excellent physiotherapist and gave suggestions to her what to do in the therapy.

Now I don’t know how this info can help you being a medical layperson :) just to tell you what my positive medical experience was. Maybe you can find a similarly reliable and not surgery-fanatic doctor to have you checked out!
Else the dissolution of bone spurs I’ve heard about that too! and it might trully be worth checking because if it does not get better it might at some point get worse..

I hope they provide the clothing info soon, because I seriously want to get myself a pretty training oufit this time! that animal print is to die for..

  • Mala says:

Most amusing. I see a lot of candy eating going on as well. :-)
